Grand Contraband Camp

When Slabtown filled, the contrabands built a second settlement in the ruins of nearby Hampton. The Confederates had burned the city to the ground in August 1861 rather than let the Union forces take it. This community was called Grand Contraband Camp. For most contrabands, the cobbled-together structures in Slabtown and Grand Contraband Camp were the first homes of their very own.
